Jan Smith is a Canadian/American artist working in vitreous enamel and altered and textured metals. Centered around mark making, her work is infl uenced by her background in drawing, intaglio, and linocut prints.
“My work evolves from an intimate connection to place… Walking, observing, and gathering are daily rituals… Slowing down in order to comprehend the complexity of patterns, surfaces, and colours — these observations inform my practice.” -Jan Smith Artist Statement
Her enamelwork involves sifting numerous fine layers of vitreous glass, which she then abrades and alters. Her mark-making, along with the unpredictability of the process, creates her work’s subtle surfaces and variations. Born in Vancouver BC, Smith received her BFA from Nova Scotia College of Art & Design in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Jan has exhibited nationally and internationally. Her work is included in public and corporate collections including the Canada Council Art Bank, Burnaby Art Gallery, and Simon Fraser University.
